An intimate dialogue between mother and daughter, captured on film and translated into dance.
‘Mama’ku’ is an ode to mothers and daughters, to what is spoken and what remains unspoken. A performance that makes us feel how deeply the past lives on in us.
How much of our mothers do we carry with us without knowing it? ‘Mama’ku’ is an intimate and layered film and dance performance about the invisible lines between mother and daughter, about what generations pass on in silence. A journey through memories, movements, and stories that live on in our bodies.
The evening opens with a documentary by Sven Peetoom, who followed choreographer Cheroney Pelupessy and her mother on their journey to Indonesia, where Cheroney tries to uncover her mother’s past and the traces she has left behind. Memories that have been hidden for generations come to life. In old customs and deeply rooted stories, Cheroney discovers not only history but also herself.
This is followed by a physical duet between Cheroney and the renowned Javanese dancer Elly Lutan (73), in which contemporary dance and traditional movement language merge. Their encounter on stage represents the distance and closeness between generations, the search and finding of who we are.
