Sustainability

How we reduce our CO₂ emissions and minimize our footprint

In recent years, Meervaart has taken targeted steps to reduce its ecological footprint. With structural investments in the building and our operations, we aim for a lasting reduction in CO₂ emissions.

What We Do

  • We use gas, electricity, and water as efficiently as possible in our theater, Meervaart, in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
  • We generate our own energy through solar panels on our roof.
  • We recover heat and energy through smart installations in the theater lounges.

Examples of Measures

  • We have switched to new heating boilers and better insulated systems to comfortably welcome our visitors.
  • Lighting in almost the entire theater has been replaced with energy-efficient LED lamps.
  • The air handling systems have been optimized in the auditoriums, with heat exchangers and smart controls for an enjoyable theater experience.
  • The spaces of our Music School and Library are also being made more sustainable for a greener future.
  • 300 solar panels on the roof of Meervaart for our own electricity generation, allowing us to continue enjoying cabaret, music, dance, and theater sustainably.

Results compared to 2015

  • 170,000 kWh less electricity consumption (equivalent to 50 households)

  • 70,000 kWh of electricity generation from solar panels

  • 100,000 kWh savings from LED lighting, adjusted installations, and more conscious behavior

  • 9,000 m³ less gas consumption, resulting in over 106 tons of CO₂ reduction

The energy savings also contribute to the financing of these sustainable investments.

Sustainable hospitality

In the hospitality sector, we also make sustainable choices:

  • No plastic bottles, but refillable glass bottles with tap water

  • Fewer chilled soft drinks, more organic lemonades

  • Cashless payments only (lower environmental impact than cash)

  • Collaboration with small-scale, sustainable suppliers such as Gulpener, EARTH Water, Teacultures, and Smit & Dorlas

Future-oriented

With these steps, Meervaart actively contributes to a more sustainable cultural sector. What we do, we do with an eye on the future — and we will continue to do so.
