The Ruggeds
Oddly Satisfying
A playful breaking and hip-hop journey that's inexplicably delightful to watch.
It bubbles from within: ready to burst
Two radical dance worlds meet in L.A.V.A., a sizzling playground where difference is not a boundary, but the engine of new movement.
In 'L.A.V.A.', ICK Amsterdam and Scenario Pubblico | Compagnia Zappalà Danza bring together two distinctive choreographic worlds. This is a meeting that has been in the air for years: the paths of Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten (ICK) and that of Roberto Zappalà have repeatedly crossed, connected by an independent vision of dance and building spaces for research, training and development.
From Catania, in the shadow of Mount Etna, Zappalà developed with his company a physical, collective movement practice, brought together in MoDem (Movimento Democratico). The body as a living archive takes center stage: shaped by daily movement, instinct and imperfection. At ICK, movement arises from breath, tension and impulse. Dancers move on the edge of control and surrender, precise and raw at once. The body does not perform steps, but constantly transforms, like a landscape under pressure.
The soundscape by Salvador Breed intensifies this tension with electronic textures that guide and disrupt. In this setting we see bodies that collide, retreat and grasp hold. In that friction something is released that is neither one nor the other. Thus 'L.A.V.A.' shows how vital force emerges: not from harmony, but from difference. The audience does not sit at a safe distance here; the eruption unfolds around you.
