De choreografie is fysiek, bijna gevaarlijk, en tot op de millimeter getimed.
— Theaterkrant over een eerdere voorstelling van Zero Dance Theatre
In this new co-production by Zero Dance Theatre and the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, sound and movement are unraveled and charged with new meaning. Dancer and choreographer Denden Karadeniz is responsible for the choreography, while creative director Mohamed Aadroun and guitarist/musical director Bas Gaakeer coordinate the music.
'Ghosts' weaves body, music and memory into a living ritual. The audience witnesses a search for inspiration. For what lies beneath the surface, and refuses to disappear. From whisper to outburst, dancers and musicians search for what lies hidden behind rituals that have lost their origins, and in doing so create new meanings. Because in our rituals lies our cultural memory; they carry the roots of who we are.
Six dancers and six musicians form one breathing body that moves, grazes and resonates. Dance and music circle around what was once animated, but now feels empty. The music moves between new compositions and influences from the musical heritage of Granada to Baghdad, with percussion, ud and violin among the leading voices. In the intuitive language of movement, hip-hop and contemporary dance merge into one recognizable, hybrid form. Thus emerges one shared language in which sound becomes movement and movement becomes rhythm.
