The Ruggeds
Oddly Satisfying
A playful breaking and hip-hop journey that's inexplicably delightful to watch.
What if a past never disappears, but continues to haunt us?
In 'DJANGAN!' (Indonesian for 'don't do it') it becomes visible what happens when war trauma settles as an invisible guest in a family. Four dancers embody a father, mother and two children in a space where every action is charged with meaning.
The paternal presence in the home is clearly palpable, determining and compelling. In silences. In reactions that evade, restrain or challenge. Everything revolves around a past that has no place, yet exerts influence on the family. This invisible weight determines the patterns within the family. It affects every touch, every glance, and creates an invisible pressure that cannot be escaped.
Choreographer Cheroney Pelupessy creates a melancholic and oppressive family portrait through urban contemporary and influences of traditional dance and instruments, in which everything is sharp and focused. But 'DJANGAN!' also shows what can emerge when a next generation decides not only to carry, but also to let go. To move forward, with what was, and to make space for what is yet to come.
The production DJANGAN! is created under the banner of ISH Talent, through which ISH supports talented, emerging artists in their professional development.
