Meervaart Studio

Een avond vol nieuw Amsterdams filmtalent

Film Lab short movie night

On Friday, June 12, the Blauwe Zaal at Meervaart transforms into a cinema where the energy of young creators is palpable from the seats to the screen. During Film Lab: Short Movie Night, a series of brand new short films premiere — raw, personal, and full of creative boldness.

This is not just any film evening. It is the festive conclusion of the Meervaart Studio Film Lab, where young Amsterdammers have worked for months on their own films. From initial idea to finished scene, from script to editing: each project has been built step by step under the guidance of professionals in the industry.

The films shown this evening are the result of intensive experimentation, writing, filming, and rewriting. Within the Film Lab, makers were given the space to transform their personal stories into cinematic form — each with their own style, voice, and perspective.

What can you expect? No standard stories, but honest and surprising short films that come straight from the heart of a new generation of filmmakers. Sometimes raw, sometimes vulnerable, sometimes playful — but always authentic.

The Meervaart Studio Film Lab is an intensive development trajectory where young talent learns not only about film, but especially by doing. Under the guidance of filmmaker and coach Paulien van Hummel, participants work on their own production, from concept to final edit.

In collaboration with the Dutch Film Academy and industry partners, real film experience is developed: cinematography, directing, lighting, sound, editing, and storytelling are all covered.

The goal? To help young creators find their own voice and convey it powerfully on the big screen.

A bridge to the film world
An important part of the Film Lab is the collaboration with the Dutch Film Academy. This connection opens doors to networks, knowledge, and possible progression toward professional film education.

Thanks to this partnership, young people not only become technically stronger, but also gain insight into their future in the creative industry. Over the past years, several participants have progressed to arts education programs or now work in the industry — as directors, editors, cinematographers, or producers. Previous Film Lab films have also been shown at festivals such as the Dutch Film Festival.

The Film Lab is not a course in the traditional sense. It is a place where experimentation is encouraged, where mistakes are part of the process, and where growth is central. Whether you already have experience or are just starting out: everyone is challenged to look beyond what they already know.
