COMMON GROUNDS

nodigt je uit om je te laten verrassen en verbinding te vinden in verschil.

COMMON GROUNDS is an evening where movement opens the conversation. Three performances – CRI(S)P, Momentum and Badke (remix) – show how bodies break free from expectations and find new forms of connection. In rhythm, sound, gesture, touch and silence, a language emerges that everyone can understand.

The performers seek each other out, fall apart and come together again. This creates a landscape of encounters where distance transforms into contact and dance becomes a source of strength for imagination and freedom. In the foyer, Meervaart Jong Atelier exhibits masks inspired by the work of Jasmijn Vermeeren.

Amsterdam Fringe Festival, Meervaart and the Nederlands Theater Festival bring these works together because they tell stories that receive too little space: honest, urgent and full of vitality.

COMMON GROUNDS invites you to let yourself be surprised and find connection in difference.

'Cri(s)p'
'Cri(s)p' is a multisensory dance performance, accessible to people with and without visual impairment. A sensory journey that explores how dance can be experienced beyond the visual.

The performance immerses the audience in a stimulating universe, somewhere between city and nature, in which all senses are equally engaged. Physical experience and rational knowledge interweave, while intimacy, imagination and curiosity open new forms of meaning.

An exploration of sensory perception, language and interpretation; of what we (think we) see and understand, and how meaning becomes (once again) a physical experience.

Dancers Petra Haans and Manuel Kiros Paolini from dance company Leefmeesters perform their duet from the production Momentum. Momentum is about that one moment that turns everything upside down, when the unexpected crosses your path and forces you to find new strength. It is a dance performance about choices, encounters and the question: how do you move forward? In the duet, Petra dances her story: vulnerable, intense and at the same time full of energy. Let yourself be taken along on a personal story that touches and invites you to reflect on your own life moments.

Dance company Leefmeesters creates dance performances about social issues. From an inclusive vision, we bring together dancers of different ages, backgrounds, bodies and experiences on stage. Leefmeesters shows that the stage belongs to everyone.

Badke(remix)
A remix is a reworked version of an existing music track. Badke(remix) is a revision of the dance performance with 10 Palestinian dancers that toured worldwide between 2013 and 2016, created by Koen Augustijnen, Rosalba Torres and Hildegard De Vuyst. The re-release of Badke now falls artistically into Palestinian hands, specifically those of Amir Sabra and Ata Khatab, and becomes Badke(remix). The title is a deliberate reversal of dabke, the name of the Palestinian folk dance and starting point of the performance. With backgrounds in traditional dabke, contemporary dance, hip-hop, capoeira or circus, the Palestinian performers bring a contemporary version of this dance that is traditionally reserved for (wedding) celebrations. Badke(remix) displays zest for life and love of dancing as a form of resistance. In Badke(remix), there is a full commitment to a contemporary version of the popular, non-academic variant, an explosion of joy, a highly vital physical expression that speaks of connection, an affirmation of belonging. Beneath the celebratory surface of Badke(remix), that other reality breaks through, like cold drafts seeping through the cracks of a poorly insulated house. But in the end, the thought prevails: we will not let ourselves be done to, by no one. We dance until we drop.

Expo Meervaart Jong
In the foyer of Meervaart, you can view the exhibition by Meervaart Jong. After a year full of creating, discovering and experimenting, the participants of the Studio Classes proudly present their work here.

This year, portraiture was central. The young artists not only explored how to depict a face or person, but also how materials can play a meaningful role within an artwork. They drew inspiration from the work of Jasmijn Vermeeren.

Jasmijn Vermeeren (1996) is a visual artist from Utrecht. Drawing from her experience with an invisible disability and chronic pain, she explores in photography, collage, video, text and installations how the body, identity and vulnerability can become visible. Vermeeren identifies as a crip artist: a term used by artists with disabilities to critically question established norms around beauty, health and representation.

Starting from this inspiration, the participants set out to find their own visual language. The result is a diverse exhibition full of personal stories, experiments and surprising materials.
