Poetry Lab
The Poetry Lab is an experimental writing program for young people in Amsterdam. Young word artists work under the guidance of word artist Smita James towards creating a collection.
The Meervaart Studio Poetry Lab is an intensive program spanning several months in which young Amsterdammers are guided and coached by professionals from the spoken word and poetry world. Under the leadership of a word artist, you work step by step towards creating and publishing your own collection of work.
The Lab is a space to experiment, to create, but above all to learn and make your voice heard. Whether you already have writing experience or have just written your first lines – the Poetry Lab challenges you to dig deeper, grow, and discover your unique style.
The Poetry Lab offers guidance in every aspect of the writing process: from developing themes and imagery to refining your performance and compiling your own collection. During the program, you not only learn how to write powerful texts, but also how to convey your message to the audience in a personal and impactful way.
The project concludes with a festive final presentation where participants perform their work for an audience, and the collaborative collection is officially launched.
Many former participants are now active as writers, performers, hosts or creators within the literary and cultural sector. Their work has been published in collections and heard on stages in the spoken word world.
