ZIEL | ROUH

ICK, AAO & Meervaart (2018)

'ZIEL' is a production by ICK Dance Amsterdam and Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra in co-production with Meervaart.

In ZIEL of ROUH (the Arabic word for ‘soul’), two divergent disciplines confront each other: music from Al-Andalus and contemporary dance collide, rub against, seek and find each other in this performance. Two disciplines, two civilizations, two frameworks of thought, two traditions together make a sum that far exceeds a simple addition.

ZIEL is a triptych in which three choreographers from ICK work with each a different current from the repertoire: the tarab (classical), sufi andalusi (mystically spiritual), and the chaabi andalusi (contemporary folk music). For this last 'folk' current, the AAO has commissioned a piece to be composed by guest composer Abderrahim Semlali specifically for the performance.
