The ‘Break A Leg Dance Battle’ takes place annually in Meervaart. This event attracts more than 1,000 dancers from home and abroad, who compete in different categories and for multiple titles. The festival offers a spectacle for both solo dancers and crews, where participants showcase their passion and talent at the highest level. In addition to the 1,000 dancers, the event also welcomes around 1,000 visitors in Meervaart.

Break A Leg is not just a dance competition; it is a celebration of hip-hop culture and a platform for connection. The festival is organized by a collaboration between Meervaart, Jurskee from Amsterdam Breaking Community, Gregory Shaggy from Stichting Free & Style, and Vince Charming Productions. The event aims to connect and inspire various dance communities, styles, and age groups.

MC Mario Bee describes the event as more than just a competition. “It’s a platform where culture comes together for both insiders and outsiders. Break A Leg is more than a contest; it brings people together,” he says. “It’s an honor to be part of this amazing event. The energy, passion, and love for dance can be felt at each edition.”

What makes Break A Leg unique is the way it brings different worlds within the dance community together, where many can learn from each other. Kim Tawjoeram, a jury member of the festival, notes: “Break A Leg offers a platform for different dancers and styles. It brings together young and old dancers, dancers new to battles and others who have been part of it for years, choreographers, and battle experts. Break A Leg provides a platform for these worlds and brings them together in an open and inspiring way.”

The impact of Break A Leg is also noticeable among the crew behind the event. Cameraman Hessel van den Hoek shares: “I am so grateful for an event like Break A Leg. It feels like everyone with an interest in dance belongs here. So many different creative people and talents come together – it’s special to experience that up close. This is always an event I look forward to, and it was great again.”

The success of Break A Leg shows how dance brings people together. The festival is not only an opportunity for dancers to showcase their talent but also a moment to celebrate the power of hip-hop culture. With the energy, passion, and love that the event manages to evoke with each edition, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for Break A Leg.
