Advisory board and selection committee Nieuwe Meervaart announced

The renewal of the southwestern shore of the Sloterplas is drawing closer. With the Nieuwe Meervaart as the beating heart of the neighborhood, an exciting phase is beginning: the search for the architectural team that will get to design this dream. And the municipality is not doing this alone. Together with an engaged advisory group of residents and an expert selection committee, they are taking the first steps toward an iconic location in Nieuw-West.

De oevers langs de Lelylaan en Meer en Vaart krijgen een compleet nieuw gezicht. In 2026 weten we welk architectenteam deze bijzondere locatie mag gaan vormgeven. De koppen zijn inmiddels bij elkaar gestoken; zowel de selectiecommissie als de adviesgroep zijn officieel van start gegaan. De eerste belangrijke klus? Het beoordelen van maar liefst 30 motivatiebrieven van architecten die popelen om aan de slag te gaan.

De stem van de buurt: de adviesgroep

Meervaart en gemeente Amsterdam geloven dat een gebouw pas echt slaagt als de gebruikers en omwonenden zich er thuis voelen. Daarom heeft de gemeente een adviesgroep van acht betrokken Amsterdammers samengesteld. Zij geven de buurt een stem in het keuzeproces.

Twee leden van deze groep schuiven zelfs direct aan bij de officiële selectiecommissie. Zo zorgt de gemeente ervoor dat het belang van de bewoners en alle betrokkenen vanaf dag één geborgd is. Op woensdag 4 maart vond de eerste inspirerende kennismaking plaats.

How was the advisory group selected?

The composition of the advisory group was a careful process, led by four active residents from Nieuw-West. With their deep roots in the neighborhood, they were also able to reach people we normally hear from less often.

From nearly 100 applications, they selected a diverse group. In doing so, they looked not only at different perspectives and backgrounds, but especially at the ability to work together. The municipality sought doers and thinkers who look beyond their own street and who view the city's future with an open mind.

"Ik ben een jonge ondernemer in de creatieve sector en bewoner van de buurt. Ik bezoek de Meervaart regelmatig en wil graag bijdragen aan de plannen voor de nieuwe Meervaart. Ik maak me zorgen over gentrificatie en de kleurloze inrichting van openbare ruimtes. Het is mijn roeping om hier iets tegen te doen en de buurt levendig en inclusief te houden. Mijn perspectief als jongere, ondernemer en creatieveling kan hierbij van waarde zijn."

Manal (20 jaar)

“Ik ben geboren en getogen in Osdorp en kom al mijn hele leven in deze buurt. Meervaart is voor mij een bekende en belangrijke plek, en ook de Sloterplas speelt een grote rol in mijn dagelijks leven. Vanuit mijn betrokkenheid bij jongeren in Nieuw-West, onder andere via het bewonersbestuur van het Nationaal Programma Samen Nieuw-West en de kerngroep jongeren, wil ik meedenken over de plannen voor de Nieuwe Meervaart. Ik vind het belangrijk dat de Nieuwe Meervaart past bij Osdorp en aansluit bij de mensen die hier wonen, leven en opgroeien. Vanuit mijn perspectief als jongere en betrokken bewoner hoop ik daaraan bij te dragen.”

"Ik ben kunstenaar en woon sinds 2017 in Geuzenveld-Slotermeer. Ik ben betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van de Van Deysselbuurt en kom regelmatig bij Meervaart. Voor mij is een goed ontwerp een ontwerp dat veiligheid, saamhorigheid en ontmoeting stimuleert. Vanuit mijn ervaring als maker, bewoner, hondeneigenaar en ontwerper breng ik een veelzijdig perspectief in. Ik wil bijdragen aan een ontwerp dat uitnodigt tot activiteit, ontspanning en verbinding."

"Ik woon al 28 jaar naast Meervaart en kijk uit op de Sloterplas. De Nieuwe Meervaart en de Zuidwestoever grenzen direct aan mijn woonomgeving, waardoor ik me betrokken voel bij de plannen. Ik vind het belangrijk dat niet alleen naar uitstraling wordt gekeken, maar ook naar praktische bruikbaarheid voor bewoners. Goede keuzes kunnen de plek versterken, terwijl verkeerde keuzes overlast kunnen veroorzaken. Ik denk graag vroeg mee om dit te voorkomen."

"Ik woon en werk in Nieuw-West en ben verbonden aan de BIZ Osdorpplein. De ontwikkeling van de Nieuwe Meervaart raakt direct de mensen die hier wonen, werken en het gebied dagelijks gebruiken. Ik wil bijdragen aan een zorgvuldig proces waarin de belangen van verschillende groepen worden meegenomen. Verbinding en samenwerking staan voor mij centraal. Met mijn ervaring als ondernemer en betrokken buurtbewoner en mijn achtergrond bij Juridische Zaken ben ik gewend om verschillende perspectieven naast elkaar te leggen en zorgvuldig met stukken en besluitvorming om te gaan."

"Als bewoner van Osdorp gebruik ik het gebied dagelijks, zowel als wandelaar rond de Sloterplas als bezoeker van de Meervaart. Deze plek is een unieke mix van cultuur, landschap en stedelijke dynamiek. Vanuit mijn achtergrond als architect en stedenbouwkundige wil ik bijdragen aan een ontwerp dat recht doet aan bewoners, gebruikers en de stad. Ik heb ervaring met het beoordelen van complexe gebouwen en wil me inzetten voor een ontwerp dat kwaliteit toevoegt aan deze bijzondere plek."

"Ik sport al sinds mijn jeugd rond de Sloterplas en heb de buurt in de loop der jaren zien veranderen, vaak ten goede. Als directeur van het Watersportcentrum Sloterplas voel ik me nauw betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van de nieuwe Meervaart. Ik wil bijdragen aan een positieve sfeer in de buurt en een ontwerp dat bewoners en gebruikers samenbrengt."

"Ik ben buurtbewoner en werk als projectontwikkelaar bij een woningcorporatie. Ik heb ervaring met architectuur uitvragen en was voorzitter van de Zuiderkerkprijs voor Amsterdamse nieuwbouw. Ik hoop dat de Nieuwe Meervaart een inspirerend, duurzaam en passend cultuurgebouw wordt dat betekenis heeft voor de buurt. Het moet een baken zijn dat trots en verbinding in Nieuw-West stimuleert. Vanuit de adviesgroep wil ik bijdragen aan een ontwerp dat deze ambities waarmaakt."

Expert perspective: the selection committee

The final choice of architect is made through an official tender process. The selection committee that makes the final decision consists of six independent experts, a representative from the municipality, our own Meervaart delegation, and of course the two delegates from the advisory group.

Kristiaan Borret | Selection Committee Chair

Kristiaan Borret's role differs from that of the other members. He is the independent chair of the committee. This means he is not permitted to vote on the architects' visions and has no say in the selection.

Kristiaan: "The question of how to promote spatial quality in urban development has motivated me since the beginning of my career. My experience lies at the intersection of theory and practice, design and policy, and the public and private sectors. I was Chief Architect in Brussels (2015-2025) and Antwerp (2006-2014) and have been working as a supervisor for Oostenburg and Hamerkwartier in Amsterdam since 2017. Additionally, I am a professor of urban planning at Ghent University and I research urban transformations and public space."

Indira van 't Klooster | Arcam

Indira van 't Klooster is director-executive of Arcam, Amsterdam's architecture center. She is also a commissioner at NV Stadsherstel and founder/chair of the Foundation for Coordination of Local Architecture Initiatives (CoLA). She studied architectural history at the University of Amsterdam. "Arcam programs at the intersection of architecture, politics and society, where reflection on and information about the role of design and commissioning in a rapidly changing world are central. The Nieuwe Meervaart challenge brings together many elements. Here lies the opportunity to connect local and (inter)national knowledge to complex local and planetary challenges."

Jan Nauta | Studio Nauta

"I am Jan Nauta, architect and founder of Studio Nauta, where we strive for a more equitable building culture. With experience in expert juries and architectural review committees, I want to contribute as a committee member to a careful and transparent selection process. The Nieuwe Meervaart is a special project because of the coherence between urban planning, architecture and programming. Amsterdam's ambition for an inclusive and fair procurement process strengthens my commitment."

Mactar Faye | Mactar

"My name is Mactar Faye. I am a cultural project leader, DJ and co-founder of Tasty Folk, a platform that connects creative communities. I work at the intersection of culture, urban development and community building, realizing projects with social and spatial impact. I am pleased to participate in this selection committee because I believe that culture must be accessible to everyone. This is an opportunity to take responsibility in a different way and contribute to a strong, diverse and forward-looking cultural offer."

Nabila Bouabbouz | Municipality of Amsterdam

"As commissioner for area development in Nieuw-West, including Urban Center Osdorpplein where the new Meervaart is located, I am part of this selection committee with conviction. My ambition is clear: a strong area requires more than housing. The new Meervaart must become the beating heart of Nieuw-West, a place for culture, meeting and talent development, one that gives identity, connects and inspires. I want to contribute to a design that is architecturally compelling and adds social meaning."

Najah Aouaki | Aouaki Concepts

"I am Najah Aouaki (drs. Economics, MSc), an economist and metropolitan strategist with 20 years of experience in the public and cultural sectors. I develop strategies and projects at the intersection of economics, community strength, vision and area development. Art and culture are a common thread in my work, not as a separate policy field, but as an instrument and lens for inclusive urban development and new economic paradigms. I am happy to apply this knowledge as a member of the selection committee."

Yassine Boussaid | Director Meervaart

"I am Yassine Boussaid, born and bred in Amsterdam with Moroccan roots and a great passion for culture. As director-executive of Meervaart since 2019, I work on a multivocal stage that reflects the city, with space for emerging makers, established institutions and young talent through education programs. With my background in political science, history and international economics, I believe that culture connects people and makes societal issues discussable."

Yttje Feddes | Independent Landscape Architect

"I am an independent landscape architect who has worked at design firms, government agencies and my own office (Feddes/Olthof, now LOF landscape) and have been a State Advisor for the Landscape. In addition to designing, I teach, advise on spatial developments and participate in quality teams and juries. I created, among other things, the Masterplan for Sloterpark and the Rondje Sloterplas. With my background and interest in Garden Cities, I enjoy thinking through how the Nieuwe Meervaart can contribute to the surroundings not only culturally but also in terms of greenery."
