A group of young people aged 16 to 27 from Meervaart Studio selected nine remarkable films from the IDFA programme that speak to them. They have been brought together under the IDFA Young Adult label. You can see them at various venues and times during the festival. The IDFA Young Adult label was made possible with support from CJP.

On Wednesday 18 November 2026, we are organising a special evening at Cinema De Vlugt together with IDFA and our Young Adult Selection Committee. We will screen the film Filthy, followed by an in-depth discussion with experts and guests about how art can contribute to processing sexual violence and trauma.

Where: Cinema De Vlugt, Amsterdam
When: Wednesday 18 November 2025
Time: 20:30 to approx. 22:40

See the full selection in the programme overview by selecting the 'IDFA Young Adult' filter or via this link, and discover all the screenings during IDFA.

Filthy
When actor-director Bárbara Mestanza was sexually assaulted in a massage parlor in Madrid in 2019, she froze. Then, in shock, she simply paid and did not report the incident. When she told others about her traumatic experience, she was invariably met with the same question: “Why did you do nothing?” She still has no idea.

The experience continues to weigh heavily on her: the abuse affects every aspect of her life. To give expression to her trauma, she decides to turn it into a theater piece, titled Sucia (Spanish for “filthy”). Meanwhile, she investigates the identity of her abuser and tries to bring him to justice.

Filthy shows a complex process spanning years—years in which Mestanza works on her highly personal theater piece and talks with her boyfriend, mother, friends, colleagues, and lawyer. This intimate, personal, and candid film is also a universal story familiar to many, as revealed by a questionnaire that Mestanza distributes to the audience after each performance of her piece.

About the Selection Committee:
As a member of the IDFA Young Adults Selection Committee, you’ll have the chance to help decide which documentaries young people really should see at the world’s biggest documentary film festival: IDFA. Together with a group of engaged and creative young people, you’ll watch films, discuss what moves you and ultimately choose which documentaries receive the Young Adults Label—and are therefore screened at the official festival in November.
