The Mountaintop

An open-hearted meeting with Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King has just given the speech of his life. He retreats into his grimy motel room. Outside, there's a storm; inside, a mysterious chambermaid awaits him. What begins as an innocent flirtation becomes an open-hearted encounter that confronts King with his successes and shortcomings, with his actions and his dreams. It is April 3, 1968; less than a day later, Martin Luther King will be assassinated.

The Mountaintop brings a fanciful retelling of the last evening of the life of an icon. This award-winning play by young black writer Katori Hall highlights how we turn ordinary people into saints, and how saints turn out to be ordinary people - fragile, vulnerable, accessible. How one voice wanted to change the world, and how his untimely death forced him to pass the torch to future generations.

This award-winning Broadway hit was seen for the first time in the Netherlands in the fiftieth anniversary year of King's death.
