Café 749
Orkater, AAO, and Meervaart (2024)
'Café 749' is a production of Orkater and Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, in co-production with Meervaart.
Amsterdam is 750 years old. To celebrate this, the regular clientele of neighborhood café 749 is working on a performance. Everyone can join in. The performance is about Amsterdam; the city that has been struggling with its lack of space for centuries. The fight for every square meter of land is slowly becoming a reality in the lives of the regulars. The brown café where everyone is always welcome, and where there is celebration, singing, and mourning, is at risk of disappearing. Unless all regulars and newcomers join forces and stand together to keep their place.
In the beautiful, historic Central Market Hall in Amsterdam-West, Orkater presents Café 749, a musical tribute to the city. The performance is also a tribute to former Amsterdam alderman De Miranda, who fought for affordable housing for all Amsterdammers. For this site-specific performance, Orkater is collaborating especially in the run-up to the celebration of Amsterdam 750 with the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, Meervaart, Markt Centraal (in the Central Market Hall), and a large cast of actors, musicians, interns from theater schools, and Amsterdammers.
