A story about freedom of expression and the role of art in times of conflict.
In the summer of 2025, graffiti artist Niels Bakkerus decides he can no longer remain silent about the situation in Gaza. In bold, graphic lettering, he paints the message “Fuck Israel, Free Palestine” on a wall at the Berenkuil in Eindhoven. What begins as a personal statement grows into a three-month-long battle in which activism, censorship and creativity converge.
Whenever his work disappears, Bakkerus returns with a new message, as the ongoing confrontation puts his creativity to the test. The wall becomes a living work of art, with each layer of paint reflecting the debate. What begins locally resonates around the world: the struggle is followed by huge numbers of people online.
The documentary 'Piece de Résistance' unfolds as a story about freedom of expression and the role of art in times of conflict. The film shows how public space becomes a place where controversies are made visible, and how one artist tries to hold on to his own voice in the midst of the storm.
After the film, we’ll talk with filmmaker Anne van Bree and artist Niels Bakkerus. The evening will be moderated by Robin Vermeulen.
