Fear is a man’s best friend.
In 'The Monster Trilogy' you dive into a world where familiar monsters get a new face and come surprisingly close to home.
When Nita Kersten discovered the work of theater maker Michael Matthews, she was immediately captivated. How could someone like Matthews – an absolute showstopper in the '80s and '90s and far too young to die – have almost vanished from our collective memory? Together with De Nationale Opera, RIGHTABOUTNOW INC., composer Cassie Kinoshi and dramaturg Maarten van Hinte, she brings The Monster Trilogy, Matthews' masterpiece full of opera, poetry and madness, back where it belongs: on stage.
In 'The Monster Trilogy' Michael Matthews took three iconic gothic figures from the 19th century as his starting point. He gave each one their own part of the trilogy and transformed them into modern myths, such as a lonely monster yearning for love and an AIDS-infected pizza delivery driver in Dracula's castle.
Forget everything you think you know about monsters, because this completely overwhelming production shows that the outsider – the monster – lives in each of us. You just have to dare to see it.
"Michael Matthews was far ahead of his time. He wrote The Monster Trilogy largely from his sickbed and died shortly after the final performance. His work remains surprisingly relevant: the loneliness, alienation and longing for connection in his texts perhaps touch us more powerfully than ever."
This production is presented with surtitles in Dutch and English.
