In Locatelli’s graceful ‘Concerto grosso in c’, the musicians shine in brief solo passages.
Vivaldi, like his contemporary Locatelli, a brilliant violinist, demonstrates his mastery in ‘The Four Seasons’. Even in his time, this universally beloved classical work was immensely popular. It brought about a revolution in musical imagination and evokes images of babbling brooks, singing birds, a barking dog, buzzing flies, storms, drunken dancers, frozen landscapes, and a crackling winter fire.
In ‘Divertimento’, one of the great string works of the 20th century, Bartók blends folk dances with baroque elements. The light, even swinging sections contrast greatly with the slow, chilling middle section, which thus gains even more depth.
